Finale
My favorite topics of the class were most definitely the ones about satanic cults, serial killers, and drugs in the media. I found it interesting that the media could play such a large role in these issues. Many times, these issues weren't even that serious, but the media blew them way out of proportion, like the satanic cults. It was interesting to see how the media can shape our opinions about some of these issues, and even take the focus off of the real issues at hand. For example, in the readings about school shootings, much of the blame was put on goth groups and music while it was simply the fact that these children did not feel as though they fit it. My least favorite topics were probably about blood diamonds and terrorism. Honestly, I don't care about diamonds. I know that sounds shocking, but I am not a diamond kinda girl. I understand that it is a serious issue, but it is not an area that I am passionate about. However, I did enjoy the use of the movie Blood Diamond to demonstrate how media can misrepresent an issue. Also, terrorism was not my favorite subject simply because it is covered in so many of my other classes. Overall, I really enjoyed the content and structure of this class. The only thing that I would do differently would be to incorporate more media into the class (videos, clips, music, etc.) but that is only because I am ADD lol.

I agree with the diamonds. That to me was probably one of the least interesting things to talk about in class. I thought we should have continued talking about music and movies instead.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you about the diamonds & terrorism issue. I think that since these are major issues in our world as of right now that we should pay more attention to them. I think a lot of people didn't know about the diamond issue before the movie came out so I definitely think it is an asset & I like that we covered it in class. But, this could just be because I am very passionate about Africa. I agree with you about incorporating more media though. I think that would be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought that the diamonds discussion was really interesting because it showed how strategic marketing and media campaigns turned a worthless rock into a priceless gem. To me, this was a huge wake up call to the ways in which media can ultimately influence society as a whole. I would definitely say that showed just how powerful the media can actually be, and that we should be careful about how much we let the media influence our overall opinions and beliefs.
ReplyDeleteAgain with the more serial killers. I agree and so do many others. But I almost forgot about the satanic cults, that was really interesting as well. A also agreed with the terrorism topic. It just gets covered so much that it kind of becomes a little boring.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you that the topic of satanic cults and serial killers was interesting. I felt no desire for the mast part to learn alot about these types of people. the most I would want to know it why they do what they do. On the other hand, I agree with you that the topic of bloddy diamonds was less interesting than the other topics. I didnt find it interesting because the thought of people in the US valueing diamonds so high maddens me. People know that diamonds arent that valueable. yes, De Beer's made ads that had false statements but we are several people. we should have noticed that what he said was not all true. We know that diamonds arent forver but yet we still live up to this glassy rock. BLEH.
